The TFN provides basic access
to email, web, usenet news and community information on a by-donation
basis to all citizens.
TFN was incorporated July 16, 1993 with the express
purpose of providing these services and has been doing so since
that time. When we started, we were fortunate to receive government
support. Our assistance under that grant ended in mid 1998 and since
then we have operated on a continuous basis through volunteer and
private sector support. This is one of the
most distinctive qualities of the Toronto FreeNet: it is a service
for and by its community. Unlike commercial internet sites,
the content and direction of services are driven by the community.
It literally will not work without you. So how can you offer your
support? more>>
Toronto Free Net CAP Network
One of the key advantages of TFN is that it is a non
profit Internet Service Provider which has over the years developed
technology strengths in network engineering, systems administration,
and software development. We believe that these are the strengths
an organization needs to have in order to ensure the sustainability
network of CAP sites over the long term.
TFN has secured through partnerships in the private
sector, resources which allow it to offer modern standards of remote
Internet access. TFN will continue to support the original simple
text-based interface for members who prefer to continue to use rudimentary
equipment. Vision impaired members sometimes find TFN's text-based
interface superior to more expensive solutions. A number of our
existing members from the disabled community have come to depend
on our service.
In the area of software development, we currently
are working on a next generation internet application to facilitate
community based internetworking. As we move forward with the CAP,
we will incorporate a systems management component in the software
to perform remote administration of sites.
Given this background, we believe that we bring
with us a unique perspective to "plan to sustain the site or
network" . We have taken care to research and select the proposed
public access sites in order to maximize the benefits to the greatest
number of participants - especially those meant to benefit most
from the CAP initiative. We are proud to introduce our CAP Network
Partners with this website. To find out more about them, follow
