• DSL Options:
  • static IPv4 address: add $5.50/month.
    Use this to run public servers from your home.
  • dry DSL: add $10/month. 
    You need dry if you aren't paying for regular telephone service in your home.  A dry line consists of a telephone line that has DSL service but not voice telephone service -- it has no phone number and you can neither receive nor make phone calls on it.  Dry service is commonly used by people whose telephone needs are met by cell phone or with VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) over their DSL connection.
  • DSL modems & filters: You must purchase your own.  Any brand & model will do.  Currently, TFN doesn't keep any stock for sale, as inexpensive choices are readily found at computer stores and in the used market.

Other features:

• All access levels include: World Wide Web (WWW) access, email, webspace (space in which to publish your personal web pages), storage space for other personal files, and the means to upload and download your files.  All TFN services can be accessed both through graphical and through text-only computers.  See technical details.
• All DSL levels include Usenet news access (sorry, no alt.binaries.* newsgroups).  We are currently unable to offer Usenet access to dialup levels.
• All dialup levels can use modem speeds up to the full 56 kbps.  Our modems automatically shift down to accommodate the maximum speed supported by your modem.  You can dial in for graphical dialup access, using PPP, or using text-only communications programs like Kermit, Procomm, and Telix.
• Limits: All DSL caps, dialup time limits, and disk space quotas are periodically reviewed and adjusted as necessary.
  Also, in the (rare) event of unusually heavy loads, the system automatically reduces all dialup time limits proportionally, to minimize busy signals and to ensure that all users can get a share of the available time.  In other words, speedy dialup connection establishment is favoured over connection length.

Payments:

• Taxes:
  • Add 13% HST to all prices.
  
  
• Setup fees:
  • To receive any service, you must be a member of Toronto Free-Net.  Membership is free of charge.  Fill out the online membership form, then show proof that you are who you said in your application (because you are becoming a voting member).
  • All members start at the Basic access level, which is free of charge.  It has no setup fee, no monthly fee, not any kind of fee.  You move up from Basic upon paying for any service.  If you stop paying, you simply return to Basic.
  • The dialup setup fee is charged when you upgrade from Basic to any other dialup level.  It does not apply if you merely switch, when your next payment is due, between paid dialup levels.
  • The residential DSL setup fee is charged when you order a DSL connection of any type.  It is also charged to relocate a DSL connection or to switch from one DSL level to another.
  
  
• Term lengths & discounts:
  • for dialup, you must pay for 3 months or more at a time.
  • for residential DSL, the first and last month are due in advance, just like rent for an apartment.
  • Prepaid price (right-most column in the tables above): to get this discounted price, pay one year's worth of fees at a time or arrange for monthly pre-authorized debit.
  
  
• Payment methods:
  • Pre-authorized debit: Monthly payments are debited automatically, directly from your bank account. 
    This method minimizes volunteer effort and overhead expenses, thus maximizing the resources that the freenet brings to the community.
    You can cancel a pre-authorized debit at any time -- you are not locked in.
    If, for a particular month, you know that your bank account won't have enough money to cover the payment, please phone the office, at least 2 days before the transaction is due to go through, and we will prevent that transaction from reaching your bank.  You can then make that payment by some other method.
  • Cheque & money order: Send cheques and money orders by postal mail or drop them off at the office.
  • Cash: Bring cash to the office.
  • If the office is closed when you arrive, but you are able to enter the building, you can put your payment in an envelope, and drop it through the office door's mail slot.  On the envelope, please write your TFN username, your full name, the access level and number of months for which the payment is intended, and the dollar amount enclosed in the envelope.  If your contact information (postal address, phone number, preferred email address) has changed since we last updated your record, please include that too.
  • Credit card: Visa, MasterCard, etc, are accepted for DSL payments, for annual dialup payments, and for large donations.  Phone the office with your credit card information, or FAX it, or send it by postal mail, or come in person.
  • Debit card: In person, at the office.
